The Sassenach

SONG - Clare/Jamie Suite from Outlander

Day 24 - May 23

I woke up with a sore throat & head cold and so Mr. B let me sleep in while he brought me back breakfast.  So sweet!  Today it’s raining quite a bit so instead of walking around the Royal Mile we thought we might go to a garden Mr. B discovered and Midhope Castle which I have been wanting to go to for 8 years.

We decided to go to Midhope first which is near the Firth & Forth Bridge. Midhope Castle was used as the stand in for Lallybroch Castle in the TV series Outlander.  I got us tickets online and off we went in the pouring rain but by the time we arrived the rain had turned into a mist and then stopped altogether.

We walked up to the castle, which is just a ruin inside and took some photos.  Walked around the to the back & explored a bit.

Mr. B hamming it up a little with his “air sword”
He looks just like Jamie right?  (Wink)

It was perfect without any crowds. We even had a few moments alone there.

We then headed for Mallory Gardens but it was pouring by then and the parking lot was quite a bit away so we scratched that idea and headed to the Sheep Heid Inn for a late lunch/early dinner.

Sheep Heid Inn - Established in the 14th Century
We were both quite happy with our front door parking spot!

The Sheep Heid Inn is a great little gastro pub with a skittle alley (bowling) and even the Queen of England has dined there too in 2016. We enjoyed it in 2017 for my birthday and it oozes atmosphere.

That bright thing above the chairs is a plaque stating that the Queen had been there but it’s got a spotlight on it so it glows…..

I remembered that Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish (both from Outlander) had been here recently and sat in big chairs like these.

I just had to do it!

However as we headed home we hit a lot of traffic. They had closed down parts of the freeway due to flooding and everyone was trying to get through on surface streets. We made it back to our hotel several hours later and headed to the bar - but it was closed for a wedding. A very nice man who was affiliated with the hotel told us that the wedding wasn’t yet and the band was just warming up and to come on in. Wonderful one bagpipe player and three drummers. Got some shots and a video while Mr. B was getting our drinks.

Perfect end to a great day……

Well it wasn’t really “the end” as we were siting in one of the “sitting rooms”, the fire alarm went off and I thought it was someone near us with an obnoxious ring tone. But no, the staff came through telling us it was a real alarm and we needed to proceed outside. It was pouring outside but they handed us silver protective blankets and told us to go away from the building to the meeting spot.

We went to our car and finished our glass of wine and watched people coming out in workout clothes, wedding attire, bathrobes and lots of silver blankets. The entire bridal party & the band we just heard inside were outside too.  Finally the fire department came and we got the “all clear” signal from the staff to go back inside.  Well done by the staff and all of the people here who were so calm. We visited with a few people from Texas and Glasgow and then came back to our room.

An hour later I realized that the sun protector  on my camera lens had fallen off somewhere along the way. Mr. B went out to search and came back in about 10 minutes chuckling and saying “you won’t believe what just happened “   He searched our route through two elevators and down several halls, the table we were sitting at earlier and then went to the reception desk to ask if anyone had turned one in. A woman sitting nearby overheard the conversation and said a friend of hers picked one up on the floor and it was in her room. She came back within minutes and gave Mr. B my hood!  Hooray for today!

Three Mini's

Song - Outlander - The Skye Boat Song by Bear McCreary

In the last few weeks I have taken three mini vacations all while SIP at home.  The first one was ordering Sam Heughan's The Sassenach Whiskey.  Mr. B and I enjoy him on the Outlander series.  It took several months to arrive and I will pop it one evening soon while watching Outlander reruns as we are in Droughtlander right now - meaning the lack of a new show until next year.

I mean just look at this man - who wouldn't want a wee dram with him - in a kilt - of course!

My second mini-vacay was ordering bread from Poilâne a bakery in Paris.....yes really Paris, France. OK here is the deal.....I was tired of our local artisan bread drying out each day and I had heard that in France they use linen bags to let some air in but not too much.  I started looking on Amazon but they all had corny labels on them so I thought of  Poilâne.

It's an amazing bakery that bakes mostly bread and is located at
8 Rue du Cherche-Midi in the heart of Paris.

I went to their website - HERE.

I placed an order for the linen bread bag and noticed that there was a 30 euro charge for shipping. It seemed a little steep but when I realized all of the money that I was saving Mr. B by not traveling to France this year, it seemed like a great deal! I threw in a few more items in my cart and noticed that the shipping cost stayed the same.  I ordered some shortbread cookie spoons for my mom to dip in her morning coffee and a loaf of Walnut Bread.  I received a text the next morning that they were just taking my bread out of the oven and getting it ready for shipping and that I would receive it by 10:30 the next morning!

Ding-dong......right on time!

It even came with a handwritten card thanking me for my order.

I had a little bit of Brie on hand and Mr. B and I had a delicious breakfast! I put on French music and danced around the kitchen with joy in my heart!!!
Delish!!!

Then little Henry arrived and he munched on a piece of bread too as did his daddy.  I sent Andy home with a slice for Ashley too!

PS - The linen bread bag doesn't work....maybe I shouldn't have left my SF Sourdough bread in it for 4 days????

My next adventure was a little more local -- Santa Fe!  Several years ago I went to a Painting Workshop there given by the artist Carol Marine. It was held at a convent and the food was catered locally and was amazing.  One of the things I loved most was their granola that they served with breakfast. We have ordered it through the years but I had forgotten about it until last week.  So I jumped on their website - Santa Fe Granola Company - and ordered us two bags.  Mmmmm.....

So what little surprises have you been enjoying during SIP?

We all need to break it up a little and have some fun!

Where Are They?

Song - Fallen Through Time from Outlander

Craigh na Dun

Mr. B and I took an amazing trip to England and Scotland in the Spring of 2017.  I did a lot of family tree research and it was wonderful to see the towns, churches, pubs and shops where my relatives spent time.
Several of the places we stopped at were related to the books and TV series Outlander. The place above Craigh na Dun is in Scotland and it is the opening scene to the series where the main character Claire travels back in time through a standing stone. It was so tranquil to see and I'm loving it but Mr. B is shrugging his shoulders saying "where are the standing stones?"  Oops - they were just props and I told him that at home but I guess he forgot......

Hopes, Dreams & Goldfish

On Wednesday we drove from Inverness to Stirling with a few stops among the way. One was a Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore.  There were crofts with peat burning fires and an interpreter in period dress.

* they did some filming of Outlander here

Long walk between the various "villages" but a fascinating view of life in the highlands.

Next we headed for the location of the Standing Stones from Outlander.  From my computer at home, it looked like a little half hour detour off the main highway at Kinnloch Rannoch but in reality it was a couple hour side trip - oops!  But we made it to the filming spot, tranquil and just like in the movies I'm loving it but Mr. B is shrugging his shoulders saying "where are the standing stones?"  Double oops - they were just props and I told him that but I guess he forgot......

**ladies - if you don't know about Outlander just Google "Sam Heughan"

Onto Drummond gardens and Doune Castle but we were starving and ate at a little French Bistro listening to Johnny Cash music. Amazing!  Drove to our hotel in Stirling and we're welcomed with an elderly tour group from Alabama and a hotel that could be in anywhere USA.  From the outside it looked like a historic Medieval building but inside it looked like Caesar's Palace.  We made the best of it and walked up the street to the Holy Rude Cemetery where Jim found some "Baird's" and we both found some historic gravestones.  Heading back down the hill we went to Nicky Tams Pub where the female bartenders give you a back massage as well as pour you a pint.

It was open mic night so I skeedaddled Mr. B right out of there!

In the morning we headed to Edinburgh with several stops along the way.

The Callendar House where Mary Queen of Scotts marriage agreement was signed.

And Linlithgow which was mostly in ruins but Mary Queen of Scotts was born here

Sorry to leave you in suspense but I will explain the title tomorrow!

Somerset England

Song - This is Your Fight Song by The Piano Guys

Mr. B and I are planning a trip to England, Wales and Scotland this coming Spring and in preparation for the trip we are Binge-Watching the series Outlander.  It's a little graphic sometimes but we zip through those parts because I enjoy the costumes, settings and scenery.

Stogumber

It has been both fun and challenging to put all of our information together gathered from friends, professional trip advisors and the internet into a plan that works for us.

The first part of the trip will be to several small villages where my father's mother came from.  As you may remember, I do enjoy working on our family genealogy. The villages are in Somerset and Devon England.

Stogumber - Crowcombe - Wiveliscombe - Bishops Nympton

My Grandma Violet's family worked for the railways.  In fact she and her twin sister were born at the railway station in Bishops Nympton.  And my Great-grandmother came from the little village of Crowcombe where the Beatles filmed part of A Hard Days Night.  Can you imaging what an upset that must have been to a village in March of 1964?

I'll keep you posted on where else we may be heading and maybe you can let me know if you have any suggestions!
